it gave up. been having some issues with random drop in FPS a few days ago. then yesterday, the FPS dropped to 40fps. ran MSI Kombustor and it failed miserably. when i restarted it. there's artifacts(colour distortion) all over the screen. it wont even boot into windows.
took it out. thought tat it was a simple case of overheat since i just got the card n i didnt clear out the dust and all. opened it up. cleaned everything. still not working. then i thought the thermal coupling paste might hv dried up. opened it up again. found out the the heatsink has terrible contact with the processor, power mosfets and the memory modules. changed the thermal paste, and fixed the thermal contact by adding a layer of aluminium to close up the gap. plug it in and its still the same.
frustrated. did some research. turns out the card has this problem all along. all 8000 series especially the 8800, 8800GT, 8800GTX, 8800GTS(which is mine) and 8800 ultra. these cards are problematic bsc of the cheap glue used to secure the die to the base of the processor. which means if the processor operates at slightly high temperature(but still well within the processor's temperature tolerance), the glue will melt and cause movement of the die which in terms breaks the solder contacts between the die and the card. english? the manufacturer screwed up and hence a defective card. dont believe me? maybe u'll believe Wikipedia.
so all we need to do is just to re-solder the broken contacts. easier said than done. these cards are built on SMT(Surface Mount Technology) which means that they arent soldered the way u guys did at KH labs. no, these needs to be reflow soldered. click here if u dont know what im talking bout. basicly you dont touch ur soldering iron to the contacts and add solder. you heat the whole thing up along with a solder liquid. heat the whole thing eh? there are two ways to do this,
1. buy a hyper expensive reflow kit and reflow solder the thing.
2. this is the LOL part. get a reflow oven and heat it to 200 degree celcius. OR, you can just dump it into a conventional oven and bake it. seriously, i've read alot of forum posts that it worked. even in lowyat there's quite a few confirmed cases. best of all... there's a video of it too. check this!
k, im not stupid enough to do so. yet. since i might get another one as replacement. n no, its not tat this thing got warranty, its just tat my uncle has 2 of them tat he got for free. hah!

The consortium will be carrying out repair works on site on Saturday, 24 April 2010 and it is expected to be completed on Sunday, 2 May 2010.During the restoration process, there will be some interruption to the traffic to Europe and the US carried through that cable. Nvidia 8800 GTS
yesterday morning was just like one of the days after coming back from NS. sleep till 8am then wake up reading. only that i was jolted up by some knocking on my bedroom door at 7.55am(i remembered bsc i actually looked at the clock on my cellphone). lazily, i limped towards the door, unlocked, turned the handle bar to see my grandfather and a guy i dont usually see in this kinda hour...... my uncle. k, mayb i do see him at this hour but tats after the form 3 PMR when i used to work at his father's factory.
he was holding a black rectangular thing which i couldnt make out what it is since i didnt put on my glasses. after some formal greetings he shoved it into my hands saying: "this is yours". i took it and fumbled for my glasses then i saw the familliar shape of a graphics card(really, its very easy to recognize the shape of one) wrapped in anti-static bag. i was like: "cool! it finally came!" no offence, but he promised to pass it to me during the CNY holidays. he's a busy man, so i dont blame him. and his wedding is going to b in April.
obviously i would immediately swap out my old one n put this one into my PC but i found out that the only video output for the 8800 is dual DVI, which looks like this
while the monitor im using used VGA which looks like this
high end cards... so i called junlin n blabbed for over 2 hours. n got him to pass me the DVI to VGA adapter which we bought during the teacher's gala dinner last year's duty. n he was too free n wanted to show off that he got his driving license so he came over to my house just to pass them to me. thx DJX!
the installation didnt took long, although there was some minor glitches due to my stupidity n greediness in overclocking the RAM. it's a power hungry card so it needs a PCI-e 6-pin power to supply power to it. n now, its up n running n i cant even get anything that would take 100% of the computing power of this GPU. i ran AVA on max setting n it still only runs at 95% capacity. it gets very very hot though. so imma try to run crysis n modern warfare 2 n see wat happens.
